Description
This is a painting of a type of chrysanthemum. This is one of the most varied members of the daisy family. Although this looks like a daisy, it is a chrysanthemum. In some cultures these flowers are used as gifts for the dead, especially children.
Here is a little list of some examples of chrysanthemum lore:
1. In Germany chrysanthemums are considered to be unlucky; they’re associated with funerals [Mettlach, Germany, August 2004].
2. Brompton Cemetery, London, All Saints Day (1 November) 1985: Most of the Polish graves had been, or were being, decorated with flowers – nearly always chrysanthemums, but in one case dahlias – and lighted candles.
3. Chrysanthemums are never brought into the house – used extensively for decorating graves for All Saints and All Souls [Days]. Austria, Bavaria. 1950s & 60s [St John's Wood, London, May 1983].
4. From an informant of Italian origin, Kettering, Northamptonshire: chrysanthemums not brought into house because of association with funerals, cemeteries [Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. March 1982].
